Hyundai wants 25,000 Boston Dynamics Atlas robots on its own assembly lines by 2028 — the humanoid kind, the ones in the viral clips doing backflips. The company that owns Boston Dynamics plans to build 30,000 of these a year, and most are headed straight for the factories where actual humans currently work. So this week 39,668 of those humans voted, and 92% of them said: strike. They are being asked, very politely, to spend the next two years assembling the machines that will assemble their own pink slips, and they declined.
What they want instead is almost quaint. A hundred bucks more a month. A cut of the profit they already made the company last year. And a promise, in writing, that a robot can’t take your job. That last one is the part the executives can’t stomach. They’ll wire you a bonus. They will not sign a sentence that says the worker matters more than the line. Because the whole pitch of automation, the only reason anyone funds a humanoid robot in the first place, is that it never votes and never asks for 30% of anything.
Here’s the part nobody at Hyundai HQ will say out loud: the workers are right, and they know it, which is why 92% is such a terrifying number in a boardroom. You don’t get 92% agreement on where to eat lunch. You get it when everyone in the building can see the same cliff. The robots aren’t coming because they’re better. They’re coming because they’re quiet. The 39,668 people who voted this week are the last ones on that floor who can still make noise — and for once they used it.
