The South African Zef trio had already broken the internet a couple years earlier with Enter the Ninja and Evil Boy, and by 2012 they were operating in their own genre, on their own visual planet, with Ninja and Yolandi looking like cartoon characters who escaped a Harmony Korine fever dream. I Don’t Need You strips back some of the rave-rap chaos and lets Yolandi carry the melody, which is somehow more unsettling than the loud songs. The video is pure Die Antwoord — kids, bunnies, primary colors, and a vibe of “you’re not invited but you can watch.” We are very much watching. Press play.
