Fiducial Midi Controller for Ableton
Read more . . . →Cool Ableton Live triggering system! This is a quick demo of the Fiducial Midi Controller, a tangible controller built using ReacTIVision software with OSCulator to send midi signals to Ableton Live. via gabeshaughnessy: My DJ skills need some work, but you get the idea. One thing you can’t see in this video is the cards are color coded. They match the Ableton Tracks. My ableton live mapping is not very sophisticated. Each clip has a card that triggers it, and you can rotate each card too, effecting something different on each track. The drum track, for example, changes the note duration, or time, when you...

Class 7: A Patchwork Culture
Read more . . . →Watch: Notorious (Tilman Jr, 2009) Reading: Jonker, Julian. "A Black Secret Technology." Critical Digital Studies: A Reader. Toronto: University of Toronto Printing Press, 2008. Print. As I began to look more at culture and the role technology plays in creating different consumption patterns I wanted to touch on one culture than references itself heavily. In order to examine hip-hop culture I decided to screen the film Notorious (2009) the biopic about the murdered or assassinated rapper Notorious B.I.G. A big part of hip hop involves sampling and building on the existing works in the genre, and the film helps to...

OiNK Admin Not Found Guilty
Read more . . . →Written by enigmax on January 15, 2010: "Lawyers have presented their final arguments in the trial of Alan Ellis. The prosecution slammed the ex-OiNK admin, saying that the site was set up with dishonest and profiteering intentions right from the start. The defense tore into IFPI and countered by calling Ellis an innovator with talents to be nurtured. Today the jury returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty, and Ellis walked free." How long are legal systems going to be junked up with these pointless trials, this is such a distraction from important issues. Read the Complete story at TorrentFreak.com...

Max/MSP Live Coding
Read more . . . →A realtime performance of creating a Max-patch, starting from zero. This is a lot like the final project in third year computer music at Carleton University. The only difference is we had all semester to make something that complex. The other minor difference was that we had to make a midi note engine rather than an audio engine, but I'm sure this would pass as acceptable. The Rules: You have 6 minutes to build a Max-patch and do a performance with it. Start with an empty patch. Only use the standard objects that are part of Max/MSP/Jitter. Don’t use externals,...

Anatomy of a Remix - Feel It by Tiesto feat Three Six Mafia
Read more . . . →Here is a quick screen capture of where I'm at so far in this remix. The first stage involved setting up all my samples in time. The vocal was really tricky on this one, and took a lot of playing around with to get it timed properly but perhaps you won't have trouble with it. Next I was trying to replace the first synth which, as it turns out, is very complex. There are many effects on Tiesto's final version. The files in the remix pack already have been processed with reverb, delays and (too much) side-chain compression by Tiesto...

Class 6: Privacy and Technology
Read more . . . →Watch: Enemy of the State (Scott, 1998) Reading: Munster, Anna. "Welcome to Google Earth." Critical Digital Studies: A Reader. Toronto: University of Toronto Printing Press, 2008. Print. As I began shifting into my units about copyright infringement I wanted to look at some of the good and bad aspects of technology’s infringement on our privacy. While a decade ago Enemy of the State (1998) seemed a like a bit of a conspiracy theory movie, the digital mapping technology that was imagined ten years ago is now a reality with Google Earth and even Google Street View within its Maps application....
