Zeds Dead - Angel 2

Zeds Dead sound like they’re having fun again. That matters, because the Canadian pair have been at this long enough to coast, and Angel 2 has the loose, grinning energy of two people who still like being in a room together. It’s a sequel in name to older material and wears that lineage lightly, taking the melodic bass template they helped popularise and roughing up its edges. The vocal floats in clean and almost sweet before the low end swings a boot through it, and that gap between pretty and mean is where the track lives. There’s a half-time section in the back third where everything drops to a crawl and the sub does the talking, and it’s the part I keep reaching for the volume during. Deadbeats has grown into a proper home for this sound, and the pair clearly still enjoy setting the tone on their own label rather than chasing anyone else’s. It’s the work of a duo comfortable enough to loosen their grip, and I’ll take this loose, grinning version over their more calculated records any day.
