Put this on at 1am with the lights off and it did that specific Kompakt thing where a track barely seems to move and somehow carries you a long way. I want you to stay comes off the Cologne label that has spent going on thirty years defining what warm, melodic minimal can be, and Under & Score fit the house style like they were raised on it. The whole track is built from almost nothing: a soft four-four pulse, a few bars of chord that loop and slowly bloom, a vocal fragment repeating the title until it stops being a sentence and turns into texture. Nothing drops, because nothing is supposed to. The pleasure is in the patience, in the tiny changes you only notice because so little else is moving around them. This is headphones-on, staring-at-the-ceiling music, the sound of a late-night loneliness Kompakt has always understood better than anyone. It would read as background music if it did not keep catching me off guard. Not every night needs a drop.
