Plus One
Read more . . . →Nobody invited him. He was in the terms and conditions. Every face in the portrait belongs there except one. Mom has pearls, the kids are scrubbed and beaming, it’s a 1950s family shot right down to the warm lighting. Then there’s the man in the back row: half in shadow, corporate lanyard, grinning like he already knows what’s in your cart. The color goes cold and blue at his outline because whatever he represents walked in through the WiFi and never signed out. The family posed for this photo. He just showed up in the frame.

Nothing to Hide
Read more . . . →He’s waving at it. That’s the whole problem. The showerhead is a security camera. Water comes out of it and so does whatever the terms of service say about your bathroom data. He looks up at it with the exact face of a man who clicked “Accept All Cookies” in 2014 and has been living with the consequences since. Cheerful. Resigned. Slightly wet. This is what “I have nothing to hide” looks like with the towel off. The camera is in the shower and the shower is in the cloud, and somewhere a server just logged his rinse cycle.

Content Warning
Read more . . . →The librarian is losing. She’s been losing since 2016. He’s in a full inflatable dinosaur suit, screaming at a phone on a tripod between the shelves. Her badge says LIBRARIAN but her face says she has thought about this man every night for a week. Public space stopped being public the moment somebody realized it had good lighting.

The Debate
Read more . . . →Two people who agree on everything, wrestling for the chyron. The banner says “Both Sides” and the arm wrestle is the most honest thing on screen, because at least it looks like effort. They work for the same network and they’re probably splitting a cab home after this. The anchor on the left gets assigned a position. The anchor on the right gets assigned the other one. The segment needs exactly enough heat to fill four minutes before the pharmaceutical ad. Nobody in the building thinks this is a debate, but the ratings need it to look like one.

Performance Review
Read more . . . →Record profits. The ottoman has a mortgage. Every earnings call uses the word “growth” like it grew itself. Somebody drew that line, and in this picture he’s the one with the bruises and a back that doubles as a coffee table. The whiskey glass alone costs more than his shift. The red in the chart is the same red on his shirt, and nobody in the room is going to mention that. The stock price does not have feelings. The footstool does.

Fast Fashion Carousel
Read more . . . →Ride’s a dollar. Somebody downstairs paid the rest. The carousel spins, the dresses change every week, and the pile underneath keeps growing. One person is stitching the next ride out of the last one. One person has champagne. Guess which one the haul video is about.
