Submorphics - Time Moves Slow (ft. Whitt)

It was raining when this came on and I’m now convinced Time Moves Slow was engineered for exactly that weather. Submorphics has spent years in the liquid drum and bass world making rollers that put mood over muscle, and this one, with Whitt on vocals, might be the most devastating thing he’s done this year. The break rolls soft and continuous underneath while the vocal drifts over the top, unhurried, a little sad, the sound of a Sunday you don’t want to end. Liquid gets written off as the polite corner of drum and bass and tracks like this are why that’s lazy: the emotion here has real weight, it’s just delivered with a light hand. The bassline is all melody, round and low, and the arrangement leaves space for the silence between hits to actually matter. There’s a moment where the drums drop out and the vocal hangs almost a cappella, and it lands harder than any bass wobble could. I’ve had it on loop long enough that the rain stopped and I didn’t notice. Some music is for the club. This one is for the window.
