• Sano - SET ME FREE

I didn’t know Sano before this and now I’ve looked them up twice. SET ME FREE has that very specific feeling of electronic music where someone has clearly thought carefully about the space between sounds — each element earns its place. The drop is restrained in a way that actually makes it hit harder. There’s no kitchen sink approach here, just the right sounds in the right place at the right moment. NCS has gotten better at surfacing stuff like this: less pure hype, more actual electronic music with something going on underneath the surface. The vocal chop in the second half works because they don’t overdo it — it appears, does its job, leaves. I keep waiting for electronic tracks like this to overplay their hand and this one never does. Simple title, not a simple track. Worth turning up loud. The full track runs about three and a half minutes and earns every second of it.

1 minute. Shorter than the average Coldplay intro. Mercifully.
