The lights haven’t come on yet but the DJ is checking the time. Three house records for the part of the night where nobody’s taking photos anymore and the music is the only thing keeping the room standing.

    1. Sonny Fodera & Chrystal - My Loving

Chrystal’s vocal is the kind that makes you angry nobody told you about her sooner. Fodera put this out in February and it’s been slow-burning through every set since — a house groove with a proper vocal performance, not a topline stitched on by a writing camp. The breakdown strips everything to her voice and a single chord, and the room goes quiet in the way that means everyone’s paying attention. My fifth listen was better than my first, which is rare for anything on a major.

    2. Shiba San - Keep It Burning

A bass-heavy groove with a vocal chop that repeats just enough to lodge and not enough to annoy. Out on Basement Leak in January and it’s been in rotation since without anyone writing a headline about it. The hi-hat has a swing that makes the rest of the beat feel like it’s leaning forward. Shiba San doesn’t make records that demand attention. They just take it.

    3. Jonas Blue & Malive - Edge of Desire

The lead melody does what a vocal would do, and the bass answers in the gap. Jonas Blue and Malive making something that sounds like neither of them separately, which is the only reason collaborations should exist. The Defected Ibiza compilation put it alongside Dusky and Route 94 and it held its weight. I heard the Franky Rizardo remix first, went back to the original, and stayed there.

The lights just came on. Walk home slow.

1 min on this. Less time than the wait for the drop in a Coldplay 'banger'.
