I heard this coming out of a café speaker before I knew what it was and stood in the doorway until the barista clocked me. “Drifter” is Klangkarussell doing the thing that made “Sonnentanz” lodge in a million heads over a decade ago: melancholy dressed up as a dancefloor track, a melody that reads happy and sad at the exact same time depending on how your week is going. Tailor’s vocal is understated to the point of a whisper, more texture than lyric, and it lets the bassline and that gently loping house groove carry the emotional weight. There’s a saxophone-shaped synth line in the back half that could have been unbearably cheesy and is instead the best part of the track, curling around the beat like smoke. What these two have always understood is restraint; the drop, if you can even call it that, is just the groove opening up half an inch and letting more light in. It never shouts and it never needs to. This is 2am-walking-home music, or 5pm-staring-out-a-train-window music, something for the transitional hours when you’re between two places and not quite either. Austrian melancholy remains a badly underrated export. Ten years on, they still know exactly how much to leave out.

Defected: The House Music Institution
Oct 2026 —
Defected Records is house music's establishment, not its underground: the London label that's been right for 25+ years while flashier sounds burned out.
