The vocal cuts out cold right before the first drop and leaves about a second of dead air, and that little held breath is the whole trick. “Hear Me Now” is Kaskade, a man who built a career on tasteful, tearduct-adjacent house, throwing in with Wooli, who makes bass drops for the express purpose of rattling fillings loose. It should be a mess. Instead MAXINE’s topline glues the pretty and the heavy together, soaring where Kaskade wants it soaring and getting shoved off a cliff exactly when Wooli takes the wheel. The melodic dubstep lane is stuffed with this formula right now, but the pedigree here buys it a lift most of its neighbours never get. The second drop swaps in a filthier bass patch that keeps the whole thing from coasting on the vocal. It’s the sound of a house veteran discovering he likes it loud in his fifties, and honestly, good for him.
