• James Poole x GUDFELLA - Gator Boots (Extended Mix)

Gator Boots is exactly the kind of thing Defected exists to put out — a big, unpretentious house record built for a specific slot around midnight when the room needs reminding why it came out. James Poole and GUDFELLA aren’t chasing anything new here, they’re just executing a familiar formula with enough swagger to make it land. The groove is all bumping bassline and a vocal chop that struts, and the extended mix gives it room to actually breathe the way house is supposed to, letting the DJ ride the tension instead of rushing to the payoff. There’s a filter sweep going into the main section around 2:40 that’s older than dirt as a technique and works every single time, which is sort of the whole point of this genre — the tricks are ancient because they keep working. I’ve got a real soft spot for house that keeps its ambitions simple and its groove non-negotiable. The bassline alone earns the download. This is Friday-night music with no deeper agenda, and thank god for that. Sometimes the boots just fit.

1 min in. Already a better experience than every Glastonbury main-stage set.
