Inner City x LOSTBOYJAY - Good Life

I was on a crowded train when the vocal came in and I involuntarily smiled at a stranger, which is a lot to ask of a Tuesday commute. “Good Life” is one of the foundational records of dance music, Inner City’s 1988 Detroit anthem that basically taught house how to be joyful, and LOSTBOYJAY has taken on the nerve-wracking job of updating it. Reworking a track this sacred is a minefield, because the original is perfect and everyone over forty has a memory bolted to it. The good news is he treats it with obvious respect. Paris Grey’s original vocal, that impossibly warm ‘let it all come and go’ hook, stays front and center, and around it LOSTBOYJAY builds a bigger, more modern trance-leaning production for a 2026 floor. At 1:40 the drop opens into a wide, arms-up synth line that keeps the euphoria of the original while handing a current DJ something to actually work with in a set. The danger is always that you sand off the soul in the name of loudness, and mostly he dodges it, keeping the groove bouncy and the low end round rather than brutal. It’s not better than the original, because nothing is, and LOSTBOYJAY clearly knows that going in. But as a way to put this untouchable song in front of a generation that might otherwise never hear it, it does precisely what it should. Some songs are simply too good to leave in the past, and ‘Good Life’ sits near the very top of that list.
