• HerShe & Jiqui - Ring The Alarm

Who hurt the sub bass, and can we thank them? Ring The Alarm is a UKF dubstep drop with no interest in your feelings, a HerShe and Jiqui link-up that spends thirty seconds pretending to be a normal song before the bass turns into a metal detector having a seizure. The vocal sample is the title screamed and nothing else, a siren of a hook fired just often enough to keep you braced. This is riddim logic at its most gleeful: minimal, mechanical, built around negative space and a bass patch engineered specifically to upset the people one floor down. The second drop switches the growl up an octave into pure insect noise and that is the one that got me grinning like a lunatic. No melody, no message, just weight and menace and a dumb joy that heavier producers often forget to include. It is over in barely three minutes and leaves the room visibly rattled. Stick it on something with a subwoofer and apologise to absolutely no one.

1 minute. Used wisely. Unlike most Coldplay run-times.
