This one made me laugh the first time the drop landed, which for a riddim track is about the best outcome available. Backfire runs on a single bass sound, a rude, rubbery, almost cartoonish growl DPRTNDRP fires over and over on a tight triplet until it tips from menacing into flat-out funny. Riddim works by repetition, hammering one idea well past the point of sense, and this commits to the bit all the way. There is barely any melody and hardly a breakdown, just that bass bouncing around a skeletal beat with a stupid amount of confidence. It should wear out fast and instead keeps finding tiny variations, a filter tweak here, a half-second of dead air there, that keep you hooked. The growl has an almost vocal, heckling quality to it, like the bass is talking trash, and DPRTNDRP leans on the silliest version of it every single chance it gets. Dumb and loud and ridiculous, and I was grinning through all ninety seconds of it. I hit replay before it had properly finished.
