• Calcou - Everything OK?

Put this on during a slow grey afternoon and it fixed my mood before I noticed it was trying. Calcou landed on MrSuicideSheep, the channel that has been a reliable pipeline for pretty, emotional electronic music for longer than most of its listeners have been going out, and Everything OK? fits the brief without feeling factory-made. It is melodic and warm, built around a vocal that asks the title question like it already suspects the answer is complicated. There is a lift in the back third where the drums open up and the whole thing turns from pensive to hopeful in the space of a few bars. That turn is the reason to stay with it. A lot of this lane blurs into pleasant background wash, and the difference here is that the emotional arc actually goes somewhere instead of hovering in place. It is a small, generous track about checking in on someone, and you can hear that it means it. I have had it on repeat for an afternoon and the question still has not worn out.
