Walked home in the actual cold with this in my ears and it felt less like a soundtrack and more like the weather getting louder. Cold Nights is deep dubstep in the proper UK sense, all space and sub and menace, nothing like the American drop-circus that stole the genre’s name for a decade. Bluff builds the whole thing around a bassline that moves slowly, almost reluctantly, like it resents being woken up. There’s a single detuned synth note hanging over the intro that never fully resolves, and that unease is the point. The drop, when it comes, is more pressure than impact, the kind you feel in your chest cavity before your ears catch up. It’s patient music made for a long night and a proper subwoofer, and it loses most of its weight coming out of a phone speaker. Heard right, though, it’s the good kind of ominous.

Syn Cole and Kazhi's Waiting is 2015 festival-aftermovie house that's aged up and shed the cheese. Late-summer light through a train window.
